Training
My Introduction to Autism course is delivered over one day
and covers the following topics:
• The characteristics
of an autism spectrum disorder and how the presentation of these are
individualised
• The impact of
differences in sensory integration
• The differences in
presentation between Asperger Syndrome and autism
• The differences in
presentation between females and males with an autism spectrum disorder
• Assessment tools to
understand WHY a behaviour/communication happens
• The different types
of interventions that can be put in place to support the understanding of
someone with an autism spectrum disorder
Workshops
I have developed autism workshops on the following topics:
• Introduction to
Autism
• Play and Intensive
Interaction
• Communication
• Adolescence (Theory)
• Adolescence and
Puberty (Practical)
• Autism and Food
• Friendships
• Toileting
These workshops have been piloted through Enable U in Forth
Valley and Fife. The duration of each
workshop is two and a half hours and provides a forum for delegates to share
experiences whilst learning more about a particular area that is relevant to
their situation.
Feedback from these workshops has been very positive and
some of the delegates’ comments are listed below:
“Loved interacting with speaker and group. Very positive,
not negative”.
“I learned strategies to put in place to minimise anxiety”.
“I have gained a better understanding of the communication
process and where we could improve”.
“Very helpful. A lot
rang true for how things are for my son.
Realised why my son does certain things or says certain things. I learned to look at behaviour as a form of
communication”.
“I learned lots of ideas for transition, puberty and
adolescence”.
